AJS #100 Raket

  I'm a big fan of this weeks guest. He's a force for all things DNB. Running both Wicked Jungle Records and ION drive, he's got 2025 planned all the way out. Please welcome, Raket. He has been spreading the sound of Jungle and Drum & Bass since 1997. Anywhere you could find good quality Drum & Bass, Raket has been there, in the crowd, on the Mic, or behind the decks. In 2014 Raket joined with a longtime friend, the artist Gridlab, and formed the production duo Self Aware. They hit the scene hard releasing on underground D&B labels from the UK with several consecutive Jungle and D&B releases. After the frustrating experience they had releasing music on underground labels, in late 2015 they decided to form their own label, Wicked Jungle Records. The label launched with the release of Wicked Jungle Volume I in January 2016. The compilation showcased a varied palette of underground Jungle and Drum & Bass. Wicked Jungle quickly became known as a go to label for classic styled Jungle tunes. By 2023 Wicked Jungle’s growth became hard to contain within the one label and Raket rebranded his sub label Ion Drive, which was primarily used as an outlet for Raket and Gridlab to experiment off genre, in the retro sounds of Electro, House and Techno.Once rebranded though, Ion Drive became the outlet for all things Drum & Bass. This allowed Wicked Jungle breathing room to focus on thesounds of classic and contemporary Jungle, Drumfunk, Hardcore, and other styles of heavily chopped break beats, that more closely align with the original sounds of Wicked Jungle Productions back in the 90's.This brings us to 2024 where Raket has relocated from sunny South Florida to Maryland. Hehas a full year of hard-hitting Jungle and Drum & Bass releases lined up for both labels,featuring artists from across the globe, as well as several from himself. You can hear new mixesdropping often on his Ion Drive Mix Series as well as pop up live streams and guest mixes onradio shows around the globe. I don't know what I was expecting when I got this mix but I was floored....It's a trainspotters delight. There must be something in the water in Chicago.  Please welcome DJ Intel. He is a Chicago-based DJ known for his dynamic blend of drum and bass, hip-hop, and downtempo sounds. A true staple in the city's underground scene, Intel is a member of Proper Drum & Bass and a founding member of the Platter Pirates Turntablist Collective. With a deep passion for both high-energy beats and smooth, atmospheric grooves, Intel crafts sets that take listeners on a journey through intense basslines and soulful rhythms. Whether playing in intimate venues or large festivals, Intel’s ability to connect with the crowd and seamlessly mix genres has earned him a dedicated following and recognition in the bass music scene. I haven't had the opportunity to meet this week's guest yet but I hope to at some point. She's a whole vibe and my new favorite DJ. I have been playing this mix almost every day since I got it 2 months ago. The amount of raw soul coming through is really special. Please welcome Toyacoyah. She's is an indigenous DJ known for blending ancestral rhythms with modern breakbeats. She began her DJ career in the late 90s at the University of Oklahoma, curating beats for her own drum and bass radio show. After moving to Austin, Texas, she became a resident DJ for Mental Note, a night dedicated to liquid funk and jazzy drum and bass. Now based in Chicago, she continues to share her passion for fast-tempo music across the Midwest. Toyacoyah has performed alongside top producers like Addison Groove, Luke Vibert, LTJ Bukem, Roni Size, and Tim Reaper, delivering sets that span electro, breaks, juke, jungle, and more.

I met this week's guest recently and we been yapping about dnb non stop....talking about all kinds of stuff really ..he's hilarious and a genuine force of positivity in our community. Representing Texas and North America at large, please welcome J. Augustus. He's a Producer, MC, DJ, and a highly sought-after Host of events. He has worked in various facets of the music industry, including lo-fi, hip-hop, Boom Bap, Drum and Bass, and other underground subgenres. He has been a staple in the Texas live music scene since the late 90s, cementing his talent and ability to connect with his audiences, bringing his own originality to the table. With that, he founded Quaziscience Recordings to showcase his production and offer a platform to other artists across the globe. I can't really remember when I met this week's guest. He has kind of been a part of the fabric of American DNB for as long as I can remember..When I join a new dnb group online or talk to some junglists in some tiny pocket of the country, they already know Mike...better known as Gigan, he stands tall in the world of drum and bass, revered for his electrifying DJ performances and groundbreaking production work. He's not just a DJ; he's a visionary force behind Boomslang Recordings, pushing the boundaries of the genre. Gigan's impact is felt far beyond the DJ booth, with his insightful contributions to Knowledge Magazine, offering invaluable perspectives on the intricacies of drum and bass culture. His journey into electronic music began with an insatiable curiosity for sonic exploration, propelling him to the forefront of the drum and bass movement. His mixes for Nu Urban Music, especially "The History of Ragga Jungle Volumes 1 & 2," showcase his talent for blending raw energy with finesse, drawing inspiration from artists like Congo Natty and Suburban Base. I started following this weeks guest on Soundcloud..10ish years ago? I have known of him or about him in some capacity via the internet for a long time now. Him and his crew have a fierce reputation for throwing some wicked parties. It's really sick to have him on. Just a few weeks ago, he was hosting an MIA joint and he put out an open invitation for someone to split his opening slot with him. I was humbled by his generosity. I'll bet whoever got that opportunity, will never forget it.  Please welcome DE LA MOTA 🔥🔥🔥Founder of the most organized dnb crew in America the "MIA" or "Murda in America". He got his start in the 90s rave scene, promoting events as large as 9k with his crew boogie tribe ( 98-2002). His music and mixes have earned him long term fans all over the globe due to his consistency and taste in music, he doesn't play what they want, he plays what they need. He has headlined or supported headliners in over 30 states representing his crew and city 1st.
